5 things we’re loving lately

This is the first of a series of posts that I’m hoping to publish on a regular basis.

I’m always on the look out for healthy food products at the grocery store; products that I feel would make a great addition to our kitchen pantry (okay, I admit, it’s usually packaged, convenience foods, but these are necessary when you have four kids)!

My trial purchases are usually a case of hit and miss so you can imagine the resulting euphoria when I happen to hit on something that our family loves

In case you’re curious, I wanted to share some of the things we’ve been enjoying lately :)

CocoVie Coconut Jam – Ingredients: Raw coconut milk, organic coconut sugar, vanilla bean extracts.

Just three ingredients.

There are 4 different flavours and so far I’ve tried the chocolate and the vanilla. Both are really, really good. I’ve been hunting high and low for a healthier alternative for my Nutella fixes and although the two don’t taste alike (at all) I’m thrilled that I’ve been able to give up Nutella and enjoy this decadent spread instead. I like to spread it on toast, rice cakes, and crackers. I’ve even been caught eating it straight from the jar! My kids haven’t taken to it yet, but it’s only a matter of time ;)

As an added bonus, CocoVie Coconut Jams are Raw, vegan, gluten-free and GMO-free.

Hol-Grain Crackers – Ingredient: Brown rice.

Yup, that’s it.

They come in several varieties but we like the no salt. My kids and I smear these with guacamole, humus and cream cheese. We also like to make little cheese sandwiches with them –  add a small slice of cheese between two crackers (I personally like to also add a slice of jalapeño).

Hol-Grain Crackers have no added sugar and they are certified gluten-free and GMO-free.



Larabars: These are made from as little as two ingredients – e.g. Cashews and dates. They come in a variety of flavours including coconut and chocolate chips.

I keep a couple of bars in the car for emergencies. These are great for those times when you are consumed with hunger pangs and are stuck in traffic.

I’m hoping to make my own larabars soon. I’ll post the recipe when I do :)

Neal Brothers Organic Salsa – Ingredients: Organic tomatoes, organic onions, organic cider vinegar, organic tomato paste, organic green pepper, organic jalapeño pepper, salt, organic dehydrated garlic, organic spices.

This is a great staple for the pantry. Serve with vegetable sticks or whole grain crackers.

Also comes in Medium and Hot – if you’re up for it :)

Nature’s Path Organic Crispy Rice – Ingredients: Brown rice, evaporated cane juice, sea salt, molasses.

My kids love this cereal as well as the Nature’s Path Organic Corn Flakes. There is a little sugar in it (2g per 3/4 serving) but my kids don’t eat it everyday so I’m okay with this amount.

If your kids like Marshmallow Squares, check out this easy, delicious no-marshmallow version made with brown crispy rice.

    Dear Saida, I’ve just discovered your blog and really enjoy it. On my own quest to make homemade Larabars I found this recipe and really like it!

      Wow! These look perfect. I love that they are made from hazelnuts. I’m going to have to try them real soon. His raw/vegan chocolate cake also looks amazing! Thanks for the link :)
